  1. What are the technical requirements for AAP eBooks?
  2. Online viewing: Computer or device with Internet connection and current web browser:

    Windows:
    Internet Explorer -> Version 8.0, 9.0
    Firefox -> Version 16
    Google Chrome-> Version 23
    Opera-> Version 12

    Mac:
    Safari: Version 5.3
    Firefox: Version 16
    Opera: Version 12

    For full functionality, Flash Version 9 & up.

    Offline viewing:
    PC or Mac: Download iPublishCentral Reader from the My Bookshelf page with Internet connection and current access rights to title.
    iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch: iOS 4.0 or later. Download AAP eBooks free app available through iTunes.
    Android smartphone or tablet device: Android 1.5 or later, access to Google Play Market. Download AAP eBooks free app available though Google Play.

  3. What institutional access is supported?
  4. Institutions can subscribe to the full eBook collection or selected sub-collections or titles on a tier model.* Subscriptions are on an annual basis. For pricing and information, contact ebooks@aap.org.

    AAP eBooks supports online access via Internet browser, or offline access on computers through the iOffline program. Mobile access for institutions is coming soon. AAP eBooks supports the following authentication models: IP address, referring URL, username/password.

    Note: NRP and Red Book are excluded from the tier model. NRP is available as a concurrent-user model, and institutions interested in Red Book can subscribe to Red Book Online, with images and updates exceeding the utility of the eBook.
  5. What format are the ebooks in? *IMPORTANT*
    • AAP eBooks are encrypted PDF files that can be accessed online through a browser on any PC/Mac. 
    • You can download the eBooks using the iPublishCentral Reader on to your PC/Mac.
    • You can download the eBooks on to an iPad/Android using AAP eBooks app
    • eBooks subscribed through AAP eBook site cannot be downloaded as a file onto any devices and you cannot use a third party application to read these eBooks.
    • AAP eBooks cannot be downloaded/copied on to a pen/thumb drive.
    • AAP eBooks cannot be accessed on e-Ink based readers like Kindle/Nook/Kobo/Sony eReader etc
    • eBooks subscribed through AAP eBookstore cannot be read on Apple iBooks or any other third party readers such as Stanza,Mobipocket Reader,Barnes and Noble eReader,The Microsoft Reader, Kindle for PC/Mac etc.
  6. What is an eBook?
  7. An eBook is an electronic version of a book. American Academy of  Pediatrics (AAP) eBooks allows users to read publications on any screen with a browser that supports Flash. AAP eBooks have the look of print books, with all of the layout, figures and images intact. Users can see a page at a time or 2-page spreads, and can zoom in for close study. Users can read books online or download them to computers for off-line reading.

  8. What can I do with my eBook?
  9. In addition to zoom, reading, and downloading, eBooks are fully searchable and users can annotate, bookmark, and highlight them. Users can search for terms in a single book, across their purchased titles, or across the full site. Users can also print a limited number of pages.

  10. Can I read my eBook right away?
  11. Yes! AAP eBooks are available instantly on purchase; with no wait time for shipping or other delays.

  12. Are eBooks updated?
  13. Individual eBooks will be updated when errata are published, and purchasers will have the opportunity to be among the first to see new editions when they are released. Subscribers to collections or the full site will automatically get new editions and new titles when they are available.

  14. Can I view a sample eBook?
  15. All AAP eBooks have sample pages available through ViewInside that users can see before purchasing. Click the View Inside button for a free preview.

  16. Does the eBook’s offline reader work on a PC or a Mac?
  17. iPublishCentral Reader works on both PC and Mac. Disk requirements will vary based on the size of the title.

  18. Can I view the eBook offline?
  19. Once the eBook has been downloaded, it can be viewed off-line at any time.

    AAP eBooks currently supports downloads to: PC, Mac, iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini, iPod Touch), Android, and Kindle Fire (APK File for Side Loading). PC & Mac are through the iPublishCentral Reader program downloadable from the Bookshelf page, and the other devices through free apps in the app stores. Log in with the same username and password you use on the Web site, and you will have access to your titles.

  20. Can I print the eBook?
  21. As a rule, it isn't possible to print the whole of a book in a single sitting. There are printing and copying restrictions placed on AAP eBooks.The eBook is protected so that only 1 page can be printed at a time.

  22. What is the return policy on an eBook?
  23. Due to the nature of the item, and unlike printed versions of a book, e-books can not be returned. 

    Once the ebook is purchased, the sale is considered to be complete and final, as with other AAP electronic products.

  24. How soon am I charged for my purchase?
  25. A charge will immediately appear on your bank statement under the name Impelsys for the purchase of your eBook(s) at ebooks.aap.org


How-to Guide

  1. How do I find my eBooks?
  2. You can tag your eBooks by hovering over the cover image in the Bookshelf view. This allows you to easily find eBooks based on how you describe them in your own words.
  3. How do I share eBooks?
  4. You can share the preview ViewInside of titles several different ways. When viewing the ViewInside, you can click on the envelope in the upper right to e-mail it to someone, or you can click on the + sign to post the widget to a social networking site or to get the widget code to paste into your own Web site.
  5. How do I play video files?
  6. Click on the video icon in the book. The video will play in your default mp4 player. If nothing happens, check your operating system and browser settings, and your media player settings to see what is your default player for mp4 files.
  7. The page is not loading completely to view my eBook online.
  8. Go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ to make sure you have an updated version of Adobe Flash Player.
  9. How to I administer my institutional account?
  10. The institutional administrator can log in at ebooks.aap.org. In the Reports section, COUNTER reports are available online or as downloads for each year and title. In the Manage Institution area, one can update access information, including users, IP addresses, and/or referring URLs.
  11. How do I read AAP eBooks on my iDevice?
  12. AAP eBooks supports the iPad, iPad Mini, iPhone, & iPod Touch running iOS 4.0 or later. Download the free AAP eBooks app from the iTunes App store, and log in to your AAP eBooks account on the About screen. You can then go to the Bookstore, choose Download Now next to the titles you have purchased but not downloaded. When they have downloaded, they will appear on the My Bookshelf screen. You can use Browse in the AAP eBookstore screen in the app, or return to ebooks.aap.org to purchase additional titles.
  13. New To Institutional Access
  14. How to Redeem an Access Code if you have one?
  15. If you have an access code, follow the below instructions to redeem the access code on eBook site.

    • Once you log in to the eBook site, you will be redirected to 'Bookshelf' page. There you will find the 'Redeem Access Code' box.
    • Click on the Button, the access code box will open up.

    • Copy/Paste the access code in the given box and click 'Redeem' button.


    • Your relevant eBooks will be subscribed and placed on your bookshelf page to access.

  16. How do I read books on my Android device?
    1. Download the Android app from the Google Play store link
    2. Login using the registered credentials from the 'About' tab.
    3. After successful login, tap on 'eBookStore' at the bottom.
    4. Search for your purchased eBook by tapping 'Browse' button on 'AAP eBookStore'. You can sort books by categories and use search to find them.
    5. Your purchased eBook(s) will be listed with 'Download Now' button and other eBooks will be listed with 'Buy' button
    6. Tap on 'Download Now' button to download the eBooks to 'My Bookshelf'.
    7. Now, you can read the downloaded eBook(s) from 'My Bookshelf,' and they will have a Read button next to them in the Bookstore view.

  17. Subscribed/Redeemed eBook not showing up on your iPad/Offline Reader Bookshelf

  18. If you are unable to find your eBook on your Bookshelf after logging in, please follow the below steps to rectify your issue:

    - Click on the "Bookstore" Tab(shopping bag icon at the end of your screen), as indicated in the screenshot
    - Once the Bookstore Page opens up, you will find a sync/refresh icon at the top of the screen(rounded arrow), that you can tap on
    - Once tapped your account will get synced with your newly added eBooks automatically
    - Now tap on the 'Bookshelf' icon at the bottom-left of your screen to return to your Bookshelf 
    - Your eBook will now be available, tap on the eBook to download
    - Once downloaded, tap on the eBook to read

     



    If you are unable to find your eBook on the iPublishCentral Offline Reader on your Desktop/Mac, follow the below steps to rectify the issue:

    - Open the iPublishCentral Reader 
    - Click on the "Account Management" option on the top-right-hand corner
    - You will find your account with an option to delete it under 'Action'
    - Click on delete and confirm the deletion on the confirmation message that appears
    - Re-Login to the Reader using the login option on the top-right-hand corner
    - Once you relogin your eBook will be synced with your account and you will find it on your Bookshelf
    - Click on 'Download' to download the eBook to the Reader 
    - Click on 'Read' to open the eBook

  19. How to Redeem an Access code & access the ebook

  20. Goto ebooks.aap.org and click on Login

    Home - AAP eBooks

    Enter your username & password if you have already one, First-time users: You must create a new username and password for this site.

    This is separate from your AAP log in.

    Bookshelf - AAP eBooks - Redeem/bookshelf

    Click on Redeem Access Code button if you have an access code that you wish to redeem and Enter the code in the box and click on the Redeem button.

    If you have already purchased the ebook,click on the Online Reader button to read online. If you wish to Download the ebook to your computer,

    Click on the Download iPublishCentral Reader Button and Download and install the reader and login with your username & password.

  21. How do I download my purchased eBooks to my iPad, iPad Mini, iPhone, or iPod Touch?
    1. Download the iOS app from the App store link http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/aap-ebooks/id448911068?mt=8
    2. Please login using your registered credentials from the "Account" tab at top left hand corner.
    3. Then, tap on the "Close" button to close the "Account" window.
    4. Next, please tap on "My Bookshelf" tab at the bottom of the iPad app.
    5. Here, your purchased eBook(s) will appear to be grayed out.
    6. Please tap on the eBook, it will start downloading to the "My Bookshelf" in the app.
    7. Once it is downloaded, tap on the eBook to read it.

             

             

             


          1. How do I download the eBook to my computer?

          2. The eBook can be downloaded as long as the computer is online at the time. From My Bookshelf, click on the link to download iPublishCentral Reader. 

            Follow the prompts to download and install the iPublishCentral Reader and the Adobe AIR program. You can then log in to your AAP eBooks -- use http://ebooks.aap.org for the account URL and your access information for the AAP eBooks Web site. You will then have all of your titles available to you for offline viewing.


            Please follow the below instructions to install the iPublishCentral Reader application to your PC/Mac and download the eBook to the iPublishCentral Reader.

            Once you login using your account you will notice a button “Download iPublishCentral reader”.


            Click on the download button to go to installation page. Click on install button to set up iPublishCentral reader on your system.


            When you use iPublishCentral reader for the first time, you need to login(top right hand side) with the following information:


            Log in as Normal user

            1. Select Normal User.
            2. Enter the URL in the Site URL (http://ebooks.aap.org/) field.
            3. Use your registered  log in credentials to log in to iPublishCentral Reader.

              • Enter your user name in the Username field
              • Enter your password in the Password field
              • Click the Sign In button
            4. Click the Sign In button.

              If the login credentials are incorrect, then an error message will be displayed "Failed to Authenticate. Invalid Site Information".

              Bookshelf displays the subscribed eBooks with a Download button.


            The iPublishCentral reader will verify your account details. If the account details are correct, the reader will continue to load. Once loaded, you can see all the books that you have subscribed online with a download link for offline reading.

            Note : iPublishCentral reader - An Adobe Air based application(formerly iOffline reader is for Personal computers only and not for tablets or other devices.

            Adobe AIR is available and supported for Windows 8 Desktop on x86-based computers. Adobe currently has no plans to support Adobe AIR for Windows 8 Modern UI applications or Windows Mobile or Windows RT devices that use 32-bit ARM architecture.

          3. How do I log into my account?
          4. Click on the sign-in link on the top right of the home page to get to the log-in screen. Type your user name and password into the correct fields on the log-in screen to log into your account.

          5. How do I change my password?
          6. Click on the "My Folder" link and choose the "Profile Setting" option, from the drop down list choose "Change Password", enter a new password and click "OK". Your password will be reset to the new password.

          7. How do I get an eBook?
          8. AAP eBooks can be acquired in multiple ways. Individuals can purchase individual titles for the life of the edition through the site. Institutions such as libraries, hospitals, and practices can subscribe to the entire AAP eBook collection by contacting ebooks@aap.org. Collection subscribers will automatically receive updates as soon as they are published to the Web site.

          9. How do I access my eBook?
          10. Individuals can access their titles using the e-mail address and password they used to purchase. Institutions can access via IP address, referring URL, or e-mail address/password combinations. Once you have logged in, the “My Bookshelf” page will display the eBooks to which you have access. Clicking on the book cover will then open the eBook, making it accessible for you to view.

          11. How can I change my view of the page?
          12. The top panel allows you to change your view of the book by clicking on one of its icons. Scrolling over the icons before clicking will initiate a pop-up burst indicating what that particular icon can change. These include:

            • Switch to double pane view
            • Switch to single pane view
            • Zoom the page
            • Fit the page to height
            • Fit the page to width
            • Toggle full-screen mode.
          13. How do I add my personal notes throughout the eBook?
          14. You can create Notes for a specific text in a paragraph or for the entire paragraph in the reader. You can view the list of Notes in the reader, edit the title/description of the Notes and delete the Notes. You can also show or hide the Notes in the reader.

            • Click  for the list view and   for the thumbnail view of My Notes along with page numbers
            •  a. To Create a Note :There are two options to Add Notes.

            Option 1

            1. Click  on the toolbar.
            2. Place the cursor on the text in the reader. My Notes pop-up appears.

            3. Click on the Title box to add title for the notes.
            4. Click on the Description box to add description of the notes.
            5. Click on the Save button.

            When the Note is saved in the eBook,   appears on the screen.

            Option 2

            1. Place the cursor on the text to create a Note and click the right mouse button. My Notes pop-up appears.
            2. Click on the Title box to add title for the notes.
            3. Click on the Description box to add description of the notes.
            4. Click on the Save button to save the Note, else click Cancel.

              When the Note is saved,  appears on the screen.

          15. How do I use the bookmark feature?
          16. The Bookmark which is created appears in upper left corner of the page. You can view a list of Bookmarks in your eBook, edit the description of the Bookmark and delete the Bookmarks from your eBook.

            • Click  for list view  and  for thumbnail view of bookmarks along with page numbers

            1. a. To Create Bookmarks

            1. Click  on the toolbar. The icon appears blue and My Bookmarks pop-up is displayed.

               

              1. Enter the description in the Description box. It is not mandatory.
              2. Click the Save button to save the Bookmark, else, click Cancel.
              3. When it is saved, the bookmark   is displayed.
            2.  To view a Bookmark

              1. Click   at the left side of the reader. A list of Bookmarks is displayed.
              2. Type the text in Search My Bookmarks to find a specific Bookmark.

               To modify Bookmark description

              1. Click  at the left side of the reader.
              2. Click My Bookmarks. A list of Bookmarks is displayed.

              3. On mouse over for a specific Bookmark,  appears.
              4. Click on   to edit the bookmark.

              5. Place the cursor in the text box and modify the description of the bookmark.
              6. Click the Save button. When you mouse over on the bookmark, the changed description is displayed.

               To filter a Bookmark

              1. Click  at the left side of the reader. A search field and a list of bookmarks are displayed.
              2. Enter the text or a word in Search My Bookmark field.

              A list of searched bookmarks is displayed.

               To delete a Bookmark

              1. Click  at the left side of the reader.
              2. Click My Bookmarks.

                A list of Bookmarks is displayed.

              3. On mouse over for a specific Bookmark,  appears.
              4. Click on  to delete the bookmark. A pop-up appears for confirmation.
              5. Click the Yes button to delete the bookmark else click No.

          17. How do I use the search option?
          18. Type a search term or phrase in the search text box and click on "Go" to search the eBook content. Choose Catalog to search the title, author, description, and other information about the eBooks, or Content to search the full text of the eBooks. You can search within an eBook, across the eBooks you own, or across the entire AAP eBooks Web site. Your search results will appear in a column on the right-hand side of the page. Specific search terms usually result in more targeted results. Note: The search option is disabled when viewing the book in the full-screen mode.
